The origin of the town is tied to the growth of the industry. In 1891, two of the most influential men in town partnered to form an industrial manufacturing company. The new company was called Rogers and Spencer Millworks. At first, Rogers and Spencer had trouble getting enough business to remain profitable, but by 1905 they were thriving. Over the next ten years, their profits continued growing, and the company expanded dramatically. Eventually, they had several mills and plants across the country.
In 1920, a large fire destroyed one of Rogers and Spencer’s mills in the town where they first began operation. Rather than rebuild somewhere else, Rogers and Spencer decided to consolidate all their operations to the site of the burned mill. That is how South Meadows.
