Farmington, Connecticut

Farmington, CT, is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 41,910 at the 2010 census.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the urban center of the town as a census-designated place (CDP).

Farmington became an incorporated town in 1785 and later a city in 1854. Farmington is home to the University of Connecticut Health Center, which employs more than 2,600 people.

The town is also home to Northwest Catholic High School and Miss Porter’s School.

In 1975, the Aetna company moved its headquarters from Hartford to Farmington. The move was a major blow to Hartford’s economy. Many high-paying jobs were lost when the move took place. However, Aetna’s relocation to Farmington created a base for high-tech companies that moved into former Aetna facilities in Hartford.

The Farmington Canal, built in the early 1800s, passed through Farmington, where it turned east towards New Haven. The canal was later used to transport goods until it was abandoned in the mid-1800s.

Today, the canal is being used as a recreational trail called the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.

The Farmington Woods Nature Preserve is located in Farmington and is open to the public. The preserve is home to various trees, plants, and animals.

The Farmington River runs through the town and is a popular destination for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.

A board of aldermen governs it. The mayor is elected every two years. A city manager runs the day-to-day operations of the town. The current mayor is Jodi Pollak.

The Farmington Town Council has eight members, four at-large and four district members. The council president is first on the ballot in elections held every year (e.g., 2004). The four at-large seats are elected every two years (e.g., 2002, 2004, 2006), and the four district seats are up for election in alternate years (e.g., 2000, 2002).
