Blue Hills, Connecticut

Blue Hills CT is a great place to visit when you want to get away from the city, but it is close enough if you need supplies or entertainment.

The hole in the face of the hill was caused by an airplane crash in 1947. The flight leader had taken his passengers up for a flight and turned around for another pass when he looked down at his compass.

The compass had stopped working, most likely due to the hills being right in front of him. So he decided to land on top of the tallest hill but crashed through several trees and hit another hill, destroying the plane. He was killed instantly, along with everyone else on board, including his family members.

To this day, neighbors living nearby have seen the faces of the flight crew in their bedroom windows. They say that it is their way of ensuring they are never forgotten. Park rangers have also heard strange noises, but when they would see what was happening, there would be no signs of anyone being there.

Blue Hills CT is governed by the Blue Hills Reservation Commission, a state agency. The reservation consists of 7,500 acres of forest and hills. It was established in 1898 to protect its forests, water resources, and archaeological sites.

The Commission offers a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, and picnicking. The trails can be challenging to navigate and allow ATVs, so it is essential to ask the park ranger where you can go.

The reservation offers several campgrounds: Camp Chickagami: has 33 sites with access to a pond and Little Chickagami Lake; Camp Mishooka: has 93 sites and houses an active Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) camp, and Camp Sky Hi: This is a tent-only area with access to the Skyline Drive trail.

The reservation also offers two pavilions for rent. One is located at Bluff Point overlooking the ocean, and the other is near Blue Hill Falls off Road 6A. The latter can be reached by hiking the moderate 1.5-mile Blue Hill Falls trail.

There are also a few historic sites on the reservation, including the Eliot Tower, which was built in 1898 and is open to the public on Thursdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm.
